(2010 World Model United Nations in Taipei)。

One Week in Beijing

Working hard, playing hard.
Most of the day time are packed with meetings and works.
Evening, something relax, and delicious.

Sunday= Yi-He-Yuan頤和園, Dong-Lai-Shun東來順羊肉爐

It flew so fast, but I enjoyed every single moment of it. Cheers, my life in BJ~

The Worst Thing about BJ Trip

is my HORRIBLE allergy to food. Initially I think it's only seafood, but I guess it also applies for
  1. Soup with seafood inside. I cannot even drink the soup even though I've not tried the ingredients already
  2. Food that's not fresh enough. I ate everything else than seafood last night, I didn't drink any alcohol, I avoided spicy food=> I still turned red and felt itchy on my legs and arms.
Yes I'm taking medicines, but no it didn't help much so far. Due to the uncertain medical care quality here, I also hesitated to go see a doctor and got a shot to end my nightmaire for good. Da*n I hate this!

Wendy

Wendy E-News- [Update from G...ler Wendy]

Hello my lovely friends,

Understood, you are excited by the title as well. I have to clarify though, that I am only a temporary contractor working for G Taiwan in Taipei. Still, you can stay excited and inspired because....... Hey! It's G ;)

I am sorry that I didn't update my life back home in Taiwan for a long while. I firstly had to conquer some horrible allergy and jet-lag issues, and entertained my family and friends who have not seen me for a long time. When I finally got prepared to start another round of job hunting, I forced myself to become super busy at that time, which I should, so I told myself: catch up with others once you got something to report. More than luckily I got the temporary offer from G mid-May and started my heavenly interesting life since then. Some more detail? Read on.

"Local Category Specialist" is my title. "G Maps" is the product that I am working so hard to improve day by day. I had one co-worker, Patty, with her excellent EE background and native English proficiency to enjoy this process of "making contributions" with. The office, 73F of Taipei 101, for sure is as great as everyone describes- extremely colorful, super creative and humane, great views (day and night) and.... no one ever worried about what to eat/drink. Patty and I received one-week training from two outstanding engineers from Mountain View and from Zurich offices. For the rest of our service, we worked closely with other cool team members in Taiwan and sometimes remotely with co-workers around the globe. We worked super hard, guaranteed, sometimes overtime, but we never complained. We both felt proud of making some tangible contributions for users in Taiwan, and potentially/indirectly for the world.

Life in G wasn't always working though. Every Tuesday evening, I played badminton or basketball with co-workers. Every Friday afternoon, our TGIF event treated us with great food, interesting updates, sometimes karaoke/Jenga/some other funs. Every lunch time, we fought for freshly cut fruits (Top target: Mango). I also volunteered to assist GServe 2009, a CSR program, to build up social workers' technology skills. And, so much more.

My original contract was ended on June 26, but thanks to God and thanks to my manager, my service has officially extended for three more weeks till July 17. Additionally, I will be on a business trip to Beijing office during June 30 to July 7. "You.....kind of.... broke a record," one of the engineers said. I only know one thing: My desire to make contributions is endless. I will always treat every single day "my last day," so that I can keep my spirit high, to explore, to enjoy, and to keep dreaming.

BTW, I did travel a bit before I started working. I went visit the Turtle Island with my parents, and I went back south to visit my grand parents & relatives and to explore the beauty of central Taiwan. My parents and my brother are fine. Cat Pipi is very healthy and lovely, sometimes a little bit too naughty. I love them. I love their company. I know they are the reason I am here, happily.

May you love whatever you are working on, whoever you are with right now as well.

Love,
Wendy

June 30 - July 7, Wendy in Beijing

Confirmed. I will be on a business trip so related expenses will be covered by the company. Project scale assumably covered both local category and transliteration for Maps. Any other highlights about this upcoming trip?
  • Flight: Direct flights Taipei-Beijing. COOL!
  • Hotel locates close to our Beijing office and Tsinghua University, meaning
-1: I can walk to work
-2: I can go visit the famous Uni campus very easily!
  • Tina Yu, my NTUMUN friend is in Beijing now!!!!! 200% sure we'll meet up
  • The most sudden unplanned international trip EVER! Broke the record kept by my Malaysia business trip in 2006
-From "heard about it" to "book the flight to go"=1 day
-From "heard about it" to "actually fly"=7 days
  • The most "WHAT?!" trip to my parents.
"Please clarify the situation for me, my girl. What happened to your contract? Who/Why/When/What/How? about the trip?"
Anyways, it's a GREAT update. Here I come again, Beijing!

P.S. 1: Last time I visit Beijing was in 1999....... 1999 & 2009, wow! That's 10 years apart!
P.S. 2: Last year around this time, early July, I went visit Shanghai for the KFC China project. So, my July routine is...... something China business trip?!

Anxious, So She Walks

She was confused, and she did not know the way to go.
She felt the infinite passion, the desire to make contributions, the hunger to offer her expertise to make things work, but similtaneously she sensed her biggest disadvantage and the cruelty of reality.
No one to blame. Nothing to blame for.

So she chose to shut her mouth.
So she walked, as she used to do- by the lake, across blocks, in the snow- by herself.
How dearly she wanted to believe: "CHANGE- Yes I Can!"

Google Translate-

Somewhere Out There

Touched, moved, bothered. Sometimes a beautiful song like this can make me cry sooooo hard. And, SO WISH that you can hear it, too.
Somewhere Out There
~by James Horner, Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil~

Somewhere out there beneath the pale moonlight
Someone's thinking of me and loving me tonight

Somewhere out there someone's saying a prayer
That we'll find one another in that big somewhere out there

And even though I know how very far apart we are
It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star

And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby
It helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky

Somewhere out there if love can see us through
Then we'll be together somewhere out there
Out where dreams come true

And even though I know how very far apart we are
It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star

And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby
It helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky

Somewhere out there if love can see us through
Then we'll be together somewhere out there
Out where dreams come true

既有難以理清的多年門派恩怨,大有血雨腥風呼之慾來之勢;

when I was surrounded by greens, chirping birds and fresh air that full of natural fragrance.....
Indeed, I miss our greens in summer.

when I was surprised by this and that part of my unplanned journey, tasted something really delicious, found something so creative and interesting.....
Indeed, I miss the time I could shout out to share with you, and see your smile or hear your voice to know that I have successfully entertained you yet again.

If you were there.
If you were here.
with me.

G Sports Night - Basketball + Badminton!

Last time when I played basketball...... junior high..... I played for 30 minutes tonight!
Last time when I played badminton..... university...... I played for 60 minutes tonight!
Yes! I played with my G co-workers in 南港運動中心(Nangang Sports Center) after work. What a sweaty evening!

I made several stupid mistake when I played the basketball. Thank God I've told everyone how bad I was and how poor my knowledge about the rules was. Sometimes I still felt ashamed, but well, there was nothing much I could do to become an expert basketball player. It was not my style....

When Judy finally arrived and was ready to play badminton with me, I felt saved! Badminton (and rock climbing, maybe?) was almost the only sport I could play well. At least my skills was "equal to or above the standard." I was surprised to find that my skills were still fair. Seriously I should consider keep the routine to play badminton, so I could stay fit and stay healthy. But you know what? I would need to find partners.....

Anyways, I find another reason to LOVE my G experience, again. See, it's an environment you have to "sweat" to enjoy it fully :D

Greedy

貪心,想要多聽到一些聲音;

「所以回去得對啦!」感受得到你真心的欣喜;
生命中有太多值得感恩值得尖叫的事情,我不得不承認,在那個環境或許一切都不會發生;

2010 Harvard WorldMUN@Taipei

From Thomas Chang, I got to know that NTUMUN (National Taiwan University Model United Nations) bid for the Harvard WorldMUN Conference since 10 years ago when they went to Athen, Greece for the Conference. Ten years of struggle and efforts paid off finally!

I attended the Conference in Brazil (2002), Germany (2003) and Egypt (2004) as a delegate and help initiated the international conference inside NTU (2004) and the 1st NTU Model UN Conference for university students islandwide in 2005. I deeply felt proud of our joint achievement and the great efforts made by the current NTUMUNers.

March 15-19, 2010, come join 1,800 students from 50 countries, 200 universities here in Taipei, Taiwan for Harvard WorldMUN Conference!

Official announcement from Harvard WorldMUN-->http://www.worldmun.org/welcome/

Dear Delegates and Faculty Advisors,

My name is Ami Nash and as the newly elected Secretary-General of the Harvard World Model United Nations team, it is my distinct privilege to invite you to the 19th session of World Model United Nations (WorldMUN). Additionally, on behalf of the Harvard team, I am pleased to announce to all members of the WorldMUN community that after days of careful deliberation, we have decided that next year's conference will be held in Taipei from Monday, March 15 to Friday, March 19, 2010 at the Taipei International Convention Center. Although all of the bids we received this year were impressive, we were particularly impressed by the creativity and dedication to the 'WorldMUN Spirit' displayed by the team from National Taiwan University.

This past year, more than 2400 delegates from over 50 countries gathered in The Hague embracing an environment of cross-cultural exchange that is unparalleled among Model UN conferences. WorldMUN aims to continue its tradition of excellence in 2010, leveraging the resources of Harvard University and extremely passionate local hosts, to uphold its reputation as one of the finest Model United Nations conferences in the world. Staffed by Harvard students and students from the local host team, WorldMUN is unique among MUN conferences in the depth, breadth, and quality of its substantive debate – along with its truly international character. This year we are proud to offer twenty-two committees, including WorldMUN's first Spanish-Language committee along with its first Joint Crisis Cabinet – an intensive interactive specialized agency focused on the situation in Sri Lanka.

Of course, WorldMUN would not be complete without the social and cultural experience. With the world's highest skyscraper, neoned street life, dozens of world-class restaurants where gourmets can sample delicious regional cuisine, along with incense-veiled temples dating back to dynastic times, and some of the world's best collections of Chinese historical artifacts, Taipei is a world of fascinating contrasts—a blending of the modern and the traditional. I can assure you that the Taipei team is working to organize events that will allow you to enjoy the vibrant culture of their city by day and night, while interacting with other delegates from across the globe.

As you may have noticed, WorldMUN will be held a week earlier in March this year, as a result of a change in Harvard's academic calendar. We hope that the new dates will allow many universities to plan for WorldMUN with greater ease, as they are closer to many universities' spring break schedules. With that said, we hope that the new dates will not conflict with any other commitments your team may have, and if the calendar change does present any potential problems, please let us know if there is anything we can do to help.

We are also acutely aware of the effect that the global financial crisis may have on many of the universities and students wishing to attend. It has always been our firm belief that financial constraints should not prevent students from attending WorldMUN, and we have therefore decided to significantly expand our already substantial financial aid program. We urge any schools considering applying for a scholarship to get in touch with questions; we will be posting our financial aid and fee waiver guidelines to this website in August.

Information on how to apply for WorldMUN will be posted to a newly revamped website (www.worldmun.org) in July, and registration will open in August. Please be sure to check back to the website this summer for further updates. Until then, I encourage you to email me (secretarygeneral@worldmun.org) with any questions or concerns you may have —I would love to hear from you all! I look forward to meeting you in Taipei in March!

Sincerely,

Ami Nash
Secretary-General
Harvard World Model United Nations 2010

Pipi Update: My Room As His Playground... Sleepground?!

Example number 1: My closet. Pipi came into my room, opened the closet door himself, jumped onto my plastic box and comfortably slept on it.

Example number 2: My desk. Again, he jumped onto my desk, pushed away all "obstacles" and made room for himself. Then, you know what happened: Pipi slept.
How can I not love him?

From 0904-Back In Taiwan
From 0904-Back In Taiwan

I Miss Music

I miss the music, and that links to you.
Miss old times, all the stories and the touching moments.
Irreplaceable. Unforgettable.

I love the moments when I heard some music and recognized them immediately.
I feel proud of myself and I feel like a great student.
I love the new joys you've brought to my life.
I hope to continue the journey steadily, but it's a dream too hard to be fulfilled.

When I asked for music, what that meant was far beyond than asking for music only.
You would understand. You could.

Pour All Functions in Your Laptop to Your Mobile

This magazine advertisement not only "tells" you the story, but also allows you to "play" with the idea. Brilliant! I saw this Brazilian ads. I thought it is very clear and will not bore the readers, but I am wondering how much it might cost to produce such an ads, how many clients could/would willing to invest, and the most important thing: how effective is it? Does this ads successfully trigger the readers to check more information about the mobile phone, and even eventually purchase the product? In another word, how effective is this ads?

Also from this idea we could find out that it indeed is harder than before to produce "print" ads. Magazines have started to have those "smell it" pages for perfumes for a long time (special paper length/width for that page and special technique to contain the smell), and now the ads provided more interactions with the reader (plastic cover, embedded items). Good luck and salute to all advertisers!

Richy

Karaoke with Mom, Enjoy

Eddie Mazuki

我還拿起Lucinda Williams的Little Honey跟毛毛推薦我的愛歌:"Little Rock Star"和"If Wishes Were Horses",順便鬼叫兩聲我有去聽過她和Niel Young演唱會的事情,推廣一下Bruce Springsteen的"Born to Run"是我的代表歌。

Daily Wendy Becomes Weekly Wendy?!

No, it's not true. I am sorry to make you feel so. It is true, though, that I didn't come to update my life as regular as I used to be. Simple reason/explanation: My lifestyle changes- I'm learning how to settle back in my usual lifestyle in TW, and at the same time I'm trying to find alternatives for my newly-built habits/routines in the US. To name a few:
  1. I went to Carrefour trying to buy some yogurt for myself, and I stood there, completely lost. Where are all those familiar brands? Gosh, Taiwanese people don't eat those brands I love but eat those local brands with tiny servings?
  2. I was doing a survey and found the questions so hard to answer. a) Many brands are so unfamiliar (they're local or Asia brands) b) We translated so many brands into Chinese, so I have difficulty recognizing them. (Maybe I'll have to google them to verify their identity.....I still have this issue.)
  3. Have no idea what to buy and how much should I view a thing as "reasonable priced." Really, I am so lost. Everything comparatively is so cheap, (for sure) and since there was also some price changes over this past year or so, I need more time to understand if I am really having a bargain or not. (My judgment was criticized by my dad and brother for several times already....)
  4. TV news. We also got a new president and new government when I was abroad in the US. Not to mention all the other things happened without notice. Who is s/he? What is that? What happened? Why did they say so? Jeez I am so lost. I feel like a foreigner.....
I did stay busy on several major things:
  1. ANTI-ALLERGY: As many of you might know, this environment change got me the horrible running nose and sometimes red spots or itchy skin. I HATE THEM! Unfortunately it's more like my destiny that I have to fight with them since I'm back... (Seriously, this is one of the major reasons why I miss Chicago/US)
  2. CLEAN MY HOUSE/MY ROOM: Not only unpacking. (No, I didn't finish my unpacking task yet.) I deeply know that I have to sort out my stuff to fully get my life back to normal. However, 1) I am lazy; 2) There are way more clean-ups to do than I expect; 3) My allergies horribly slow down my pace; 4) Sometimes I resist to face the reality that I am already back. There's (kind of) no return.
  3. JOB-HUNTING: Similar things happen all over again-- revising/submitting resumes, visiting corporate Web sites, building up/extending connections, thinking outside-of-box again for potential opportunities, reaching out to head hunters....
-Contacted corps: Yahoo! Taiwan, Google Taiwan, Unilever Taiwan, Ogilvy Taiwan, ASUS, 天下遠見, etc
-Contacted head hunters: Manpower Taiwan, Dynatech Business Associates(DBA)
  4. CATCH-UP WITH FRIENDS:
    -Cambodia 8 sisters
    -Magic 4
    -Ken IMC '06
    -NTU friends + NTUMUNers
    -Wooitee
  5. HAVE FUN:
-Watching TV (Welcome back! My Japanese channel)
    -Keeping my Pipi company :)
    From 0904-Back In Taiwan
-Lots and Lots and Lots of great food~
    From 0904-Back In Taiwan
-Turtle Island visit with parents: dolphin swimming nearby our boat!!!!
    From 090416-Turtle Island
-Baseball game with Wooitee, Johnny and MUNers
From 0904-Back In Taiwan
SOMETHING RANDOM:
-Interviewed by Phoenix TV鳳凰衛視 for my overseas medical care experience
-Meeting up with/replying emails to existing/potential IMCers
-Listening to speeches
-Giving a talk on my brother's class in NTOU

Oh I am busy. As always.

MySpace Names Ex-Facebook Exec CEO- Peek Into Facebook & MySpace's $$ Model

It is a big news and a big change, but I didn't refer to the CEO change part. I mean the potential change Mr. Van Natta might bring to MySpace's business. The value of this post on Advertising Age is actually its comparison of MySpace's and Facebook's business (monetization) model, and of the difference in unique visitors. SO, what will happen later? Let's wait and see!

MySpace Names Ex-Facebook Exec Van Natta CEO

Can He Keep the Revenue Flowing at News Corp. Site Even as U.S. Traffic Drops?

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- In a heavily anticipated move, MySpace has named former Facebook exec Owen Van Natta as CEO. He replaces Myspace founder Chris DeWolfe, who left the post a day and a half ago but is staying on as an adviser. Mr. Van Natta's hiring was first reported by AllThingsD.com..... to continue reading...

Turtle Island Visit

Thanks to Mom, Dad and I got a chance to go visit this island located at the North-East corner of Taiwan. It was a day full of sweaty hiking and natural beauty. The best part: we saw dolphins swam by our boat on our way to the island!!!!! (Those who know me well understand how important this is to me ^^)

Photos explains everything. For some professional photos (especially dolphins) please check HERE- provided by one of the amateur photographer in the team.

The Smell- Home and US

I've been back for several days, and spent most of the time at home. Reason? I am ill and I am fighting with the jet lag in every way. Running nose came back to me. My face and body itches, with red dots sometimes. It's so bitter inside of my mouth. I felt lazy in the afternoon when it's time for me to bed if I were in the US (13 hours time difference between Chicago and Taipei). My back aches, and according to my Chinese doctor, my shoulders are tight. I felt mosquito bite super unbearable, especially because I didn't have to worry about this for such a long time already. Oh and by the way, the humidity that made me feel chilly at night and the same humidity that made me sweat in the day time.

But you know, there is something more. I was online checking some updates- couldn't help it. I desired to grab some people's attention, and to talk to them in English. Somehow I refused to unpack, because once things were settled, I would have to admit that everything is so true now. I lost the connections. I officially left.

and I lost you.

Officially, "in the US" was removed from the Title

"Daily Wendy in the US" going into history => "Daily Wendy"
In less than 12 hours I will be flying, and the direction is called "home." Sounds so not real for some time, but it is so true now. I have collected all the hugs, the great views, the unforgetable companies and the best wishes. So off I go continue on my life journey. Every single person who has supported me throughout my time in the US: Thank you. Please, oh please, keep supporting me in the next phase of my life. It's just because "Daily Wendy" will always be the place I keep all of you updated about my life, no matter where I go, no matter if I am physically with you or not.

Well, I am still sad.....

1.5 Years

Wendy H.W. Chen

(English translation)
I have a line to tell, it is about a story
There are you and me, laughters and tears
A very simple, common story

I have a line to tell, it's about a story
There are you and me, laughters and tears
A very simple, common story

We, together, got familiar with the directions
We, together, fought with the evil landlord
For study and for career, for everyday life,
for if he is a lover or just a friend,
We worried together, we frowned together

Additionally, the text messages you delivered and the greetings you sent
With the dish you cooked and the wine you prepared for me
Those stories inside Northwestern campus, by Lake Michigan,
New Years Eve, the fireworks, the parade, and my piano show
Oh, in the one and a half year, there were you, and there was me

I have a line to tell, thank God there are you and me
The world is huge, and there are so many people
But we can write our stories together

Still, I want to tell you that line: Thank God there are you and me
No matter where you and I will be in the future
Please remember me
And our story......

"Hello, Wendy speaking~" No more.

So Long! Faculty, Staff and IMCers

It is never easy to say goodbye, but it is the time. I went to MTC and Fisk Hall this morning to have a final glance of the school building, and to try meet faculty and staff for the last time. I was very lucky to meet both of the career services angels: Nancy and Caitlin and had a long, pleasant conversation with them. When I got to the MTC building, both "Tom"s, John, Ed and Jim happened to come in, happened to be leaving but still had few seconds to talk, or happened to show up-dissapear-show up again for me to take a photo with.
As for dinner time, Bronwen, Eileen and Michelle came join me with greetings from Lakshmi and Kristine. I truly enjoyed talking to them and sometimes listening to them. Some topics will not be common talks among friends and me after I go back, because they were just "not relevant." Some memories, truly played as a movie in front of me silently at the same time, flew with the background "music" created by my fellow IMCers. By the way, Ann, I didn't forget our phone talk in the p.m. I miss you a lot, too.

It is sad, to realize that this journey really has come to an end. Hugs from Bronwen, Michelle and Eileen were so warm and so unforgetable. I will not forget your kindness and support, and I will always remember to come back visit my friends- those I cared so much, and those kept me in their hearts.

Especially you, Eileen. Especially you. Thank you!

American Classmates' Farewell Dinner Coming~

Originally only Eileen, and then added Bronwen. There might be more showing up tomorrow evening, but I have started to feel moved already. The reason is simple, because I knew that I might be the only one (or among very few) international students who received their concern and sincere wishes. People who have left so far was sent off mostly by people from their own country and speaking the same language. I, overwhelmingly luckily, was cherished and valued by these kind local talents. I was loved. Deeply loved....

First John Hancock Signature Lounge "Skyscraper" with Tracy

From Post-NU Life- "Skyscraper" @ JHC, $11.50
Maybe this sounds unbelievable, but it is my first time drinking at the Signature Lounge on the 96 floor of John Hancock Center! Luckily I was not alone! I got Tracy Tseng, my NTU classmate, with me! Tracy came to Chicago for a conference and I thus got this wonderful chance to meet her after such a long time. Thanks to her visit and the clear sunny day, I thus proposed to stop by John Hancock for a drink to appreciate sunset and to see the night view of Chicago. Besides those updates we shared with each other, as a semi-local, I shared so many things I knew about Chicagoland with her. At the same time, I deeply realized how much I love this place and how much I will miss this city.

I will miss the Blues, the architecture, the Lake, the River, the cool wind in summer, the Bean, the Park, the shining night views, the random walk, the boat tour, the breeze of freedom, and even the lousy CTA.
From Post-NU Life- Tracy's visit April 1
One's emotion and memory about a city could be this complex. You might not notice it until you have to say goodbye to it for a long time (or for good?) Thank you Tracy for offering me this opportunity to review my city again. :)
