BLOG:http://www.wretch.cc/blog/gjo

"Enemies of the People," and Jasmine Flower
Enemies of the People" Adapted & Directed by Hsiao-Mei
I went for the above performance tonight, and was deeply touched by the historical tragedy- Chinese Cultural Revolution- it revealed and the message it delivered. After short discussion with Andrea, we both agreed that the most touching plot was the time a girl put on mourning dress to declare her love toward her lover- who was crucified to death for ridiculous reason- in public.
Unfortunately, yes, she was tortured to death by the Red Guard......
On my way back, all the plots remained in my mind, as well as the famous Chinese folk song played in the drama- Jasmine Flower.....

"Are you insane?
Put on the mourning dress meant that you were (agreed) with him.
Those who criticized him will criticize you as well, which will lead you to death!"Other people tried to convince her.
"I don't care. I wanted to show everyone- I love him."She responded in a stony firm tone.

OMG! You Are from Taiwan!!!!
"I thought you are from China!" Yoon Jung said, "because most of the time, I saw you hanging out with people from China but not those from Taiwan!"
Surprise, surprise. I have no clue why, and it's not my intention to act like this. I just subconsciously approached people "different" from me, and this pattern has been my pattern since long ago.....
"Oh My God! You are from Taiwan!" (Imaging Yoon Jung's face)
Who doesn't think this interesting?

Analysis & Insight OR Brand & Communications?
It is time to pick my concentration in IMC, but I'm still hesitating.
I prefer Brand & Communications track, and I am, according to others observation, talented in this area. "You are a born PR person, Wendy." I gratefully accepted their compliment and encouragement, but the reality showed that I would be less competitive (than the AI persons AND than the native speakers) if I ever considered to find a job here after graduation. Yet, to force myself digging into those numbers and models will be as torturous as .... for me. The short-term guarantee would be (maybe) a better job with higher salary, and, a headache everyday :P
Well, it seemed like the battle again:

He Distracted Me...
Mom threw me some lines during the class, and the eye-catching contents were as follows:
Pipi(our cat) wanted to go out with us every morning.Geez.... I miss him a lot!!!!
Since your dad didn't start his semester yet(he's a uni professor), basically he would be home keeping Pipi company.
However, this morning when your dad ask Pipi "How about go to (Mom's) school today?"(My mom worked in a primary school)
Upon the time my dad opened the gate of his handbasket (we used to carry him around), Pipi entered and sat comfortably inside.
"Action is better than words." Even our cat understood this.
After he arrived at the school, everyone who entered Mom's office went to say hello with Pipi, and he greeted all extremely friendly- lying on the floor with his chest up, asking for a pat, almost "saying" "keeping me company for a little while, please~".
How smart was our lovely Pipi!

What A Discovery~
Learn!
Well, Well, Well發現兩件有趣的事:

起風的時候;
斜角屋頂上的殘雪滑落的時候;
在街角與朋友巧遇,下個瞬間又各奔東西的時候;
獨飲一杯熱可可的時候;
剛討論完一個報告,享受完團體腦力激盪的高潮又隨即遁回斗室的時候;
捧著遠道而來的信件,又感動又惆悵的時候;
小睡片刻,夢裡的親朋好友與皮皮輪番上陣醒來卻發現一場空的時候;
行程滿檔,驚喜不斷,卻找不到那個最想抓著巴巴訴說的對象的時候;

Wendy E-News-[Hello Everyone, Greetings from Chicago again!]
Dear my lovely friends,
Warmest Greetings from Wendy in Chicago!
I have not heard from you for a long time, and neither have you heard from me. So, time for a little bit update!
First, Study.
Sure should we start from this point. That's the PRIMARY reason I came here.
After three month struggle from September to December 2007, I have started another circle of struggle since this January- and this will continue till mid March. My academic achievement is just fair, I delightedly received the result. I'm especially appreciated of my two lovely professors in "Statistics" and "Marketing Management" for not kicking me out of the class (even the country). Truly, I have tried my best.
As for "Communication Skills & Persuasion" and "Consumer Insight," I didn't get pretty enough scores because of my continuous adjustment to English academic environment and American culture as well as its market. Well, since I have acknowledged that I am not an American, try my best and happily welcome any result is the best I could do.
For this quarter, my new struggle are "Database Marketing & Analysis" and "Marketing Finance." The best way I used to conquer them was to stay aside by some clever classmates all the time and asked questions over and over again until I finally got the idea. The other two classes are "Media Economics & Technology" and "Stakeholders & Community." These two exposed me to many up-to-date trends and concepts, and I often felt excited about what I learnt in class!
Additionally, although I got tons of group projects to do for this quarter, the cooperation with classmates of all nationalities brought me fresh surprises! The interactions with people from America, Morocco, China, South Korea, India, Pakistan are valuable learnings for me outside of textbooks!
My participation in the 2008 Kellogg Marketing Conference- Breaking the Rules was also worth mentioning. The dynamic ideas and practices from all industries recharged my mind that day. I felt so full of energy!
OK! Time for FUN!
My winter break 2007 was spent in New Jersey, New York and Washington DC. I skied, went up to The Empire State Building Observatory, visited Metropolitan Museum, wondered around in Central Park, had tons of fun in Times Square and SOHO, played bowling with friends to welcome 2008, etc.
After coming back to Chicago, I went for another ski trip in Wisconsin, visited Contemporary Art Museum, appreciated night view on John Hancock Center Observatory, listened to live Blues in Blue Chicago, cheered for Chicago Bulls...
Everyone reminded me to "Study Hard, Play Harder! "
You see, I didn't forget!
It goes without saying that I got many opportunities to meet new friends and to grow deeper relationships with old friends when involving in all the activities. And thank God, I was always surrounded by warm friendships no matter where I am.
So, proceed to my Birthday and Chinese New Year.
Besides the greetings/gifts from family and friends, I gave myself a big gift- to learn a Peacock Dance from fellow Mainland Chinese friends. Furthermore, I danced on stage on my birthday, which is the Chinese New Year Celebration day.
You know, I was just trying to prove against the saying that "You cannot teach an old dog new tricks." And hey! I am no old dog yet! ;)
Lastly, internship
According to my program's design, my fourth quarter (Summer Vacation) should be the one for internship, and we should be advised by professor(s) and/or corporation managers to work on some researches or projects. All students are so busy on taking care of our study and internship applications. I just finished my application for Coca-Cola (in Atlanta), and waited for interview notification (if any). I will apply for some other companies soon later again. Yeah.... will be soooo busy!
This update is actually quite long, sorry :P
Thank you for reading the email, and best wishes for your year and everything!
Take Care!

Vote for Taipei on Monopoly!
One of my favorite board games, Monopoly, is creating a "Global Monopoly."
We have a chance to put Taipei, TW on the monopoly board. So far, Taipei is considered a "wildcard city" the top two wildcards will be put on the board.
So VOTE! Also, you can cast one vote every single day, you just have to sign-up. Don't be lazy!

Marketing Finance
(Well, the only bad thing of tonight....)
Sarah and the BTS Express表演者都是很酷的黑人,天生具有魅力的唱腔和舒服的音樂讓聽眾不自覺隨之搖擺,主唱的Sarah讓我們都忍不住想起電影裡常常飾演big mama角色的那個壯碩的女黑人Queen Latifah,她的表演風格甚至有時候會讓我想到Whoopi Goldberg在修女也瘋狂裡的演出,真High!

So, What Sushi Are You? "Sushi Yama" Presentation
For the "Stakeholder and Customer Relationship Management" class, we were required to come up with a viral marketing plan for a food service company. My group member and I, thus, chose to develop a plan through Facebook to promote our fake Japanese restaurant "Sushi Yama." We created many interesting ideas and enjoyed the discussion, and I volunteered to present for our group.
That was actually a bold thing to do, even naive. I apparently overestimated my presentation skills :( Thanks a lot to Myriam and Annie, I went to their room for rehearsal a night before for 2 hours. They both helped a lot to give me idea on how to make the presentation flow fluently with appropriate vocabularies/sentences to use.
"First part of your presentation is VERY IMPORTANT! Wendy." Myriam reminded me again and again.
"Surprise your audience! Make them interested in what you're going to say. Make them not bored."
So, when I started my presentation in class, I greeted everyone in Japanese first- it worked.
Because of the unexpected change by Clarke, my presentation proceeded in two separate sections and was done differently than planned. Still, thanks to the rehearsal, I got fair enough control over the contents to present and the proper responses to answer questions. Truth be told, there was still one question that I HAD COMPLETELY NO IDEA. But I was lucky enough to response in the way by appreciating the challenger to offer the information to help Sushi Yama refine our plan. My reaction was praised by Clarke, (yay~) and my group members seemed to view it a clever answer, too.
Well, maybe I was truly somehow talented in this kind of PR job?

Birthday, Chinese New Year Celebration
I receive birthday wishes more than expected :) Wonderful!
Countless people sent/posted/delivered their wishes via so diverse ways: Fie(DK) in Denmark, Kathleen(ZA) + Wooi-Tee(MY) in London, Andrea(CH) in Switzerland, Alex(DE) in Germany, Jon(TW) in Thailand, Eric Khoo(MY) in Kuala Lumpur, Marian(TW) in Chicago, Wanjung(TW) + Kazu(JP) in Washington DC, Thomas(TW) in Seattle, Shehand(TW) in New York, Anita(TW) in North Carolina, Explore scouts + Craig + Mom + Isabel + Howard in Taiwan, NU classmates and other friends....
I was so surrounded by all your love! How can I pay you all back, sweeties?
Special thanks also goes to Serena! Your hand-made card was truly touching. Thank our Lord to linked us together! Thanks Chia-Ying for the surprise card~ This little piece was cute~
Additionally, the Chinese New Year performance went successful! I made no mistake for our peacock dance, yay~~(so far no clear photo, I'll try to collect some and share with you later!) For those people I invited to come, though they didn't understand fully on what's going on, they all enjoy some part of the show and the atmosphere, which was great to know. After my performance, I did translation for Stacy, my host-family sister, and her friend Daniel for some time and proceeded to translate for Martin(DE) later. I was glad that my translation helped for them to enjoy our show!
Yet, at least I was trying! And I made it this time!
Happy Happy Birthday Wendy~
You are now, officially a quarter of a century old ~

Peacock dancing was complicated to learn, but I enjoyed the feeling to try something new, something I didn't know before (maybe won't know later as well). I was envious of the other performers, because they at least got one special skill to perform and to introduce to other people some core concept of Chinese culture. I wish I would have learnt some Chinese opera/dancing/instruments before.....:(Yet, at least I was trying! And I made it this time!
Happy Happy Birthday Wendy~

OMG~~~ 10+ B-Day Wishes!!!!
from Taiwan!!!!!
I got a phone call earlier from Mushroomyuki, but not only her. There were TONS of Explore Scout members gathering together for a meeting, and they phoned to deliver the warmest wishes in the world~
Every and each one of you, thank you so much!
Thank you for remember me, thank you for the phone call,
thank you for the care, and, thank you for your LOVE!
And, of course, grateful also went to my dearest Mom and Dad. Your happy b-day song were the most touching in the world. Nothing can beat that.
Thank you for giving me life, though I complained a lot so far :P
Thank you for being so supportive always, and for thinking of my needs all the time.
Mom, your "我們要吃蛋糕、我們要吃蛋糕" is the most wonderful song for this day. Really.

I love you all. I love you!
"I Don't Know Why...."
"I miss you."
I got a b-day card from K, and was moved by the opening sentence. This is the first surprise this year, and it came in at the point that I felt so down. He used too many words that was so encouraging but those was just not me. I was flattered to the extend that I felt so hesitate to admit the person he's describing was the person I knew...
Yet, truth be told, I was inspired and moved by the gift.
